POSITION DESCRIPTION - ABORIGINAL HERITAGE CONSULTANT

Coast History & Heritage (‘Coast’) is a Sydney-based consultancy specialising in Aboriginal cultural heritage and historical archaeology and Aboriginal history research and interpretation. We work thoroughly and ethically to go beyond simple compliance, and also seek to promote heritage and history to broader audiences. Our range of services involves the delivery of Aboriginal and historical archaeological heritage consulting services to private and public sector clients, including advice, assessment, excavation and strategic planning.

We are looking for a passionate Aboriginal heritage consultant who shares our vision, and who can help us expand our capacity to deliver quality heritage management advice and assessment.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • To work collaboratively with Coast Senior Heritage Consultant Fenella Atkinson and Coast Director Dr Paul Irish to manage and deliver Aboriginal heritage projects as part of a small and focussed team, including:

    • undertaking surveys of a broad range of property sizes and locations, and assessing their Aboriginal heritage potential.

    • undertaking archaeological test and salvage excavations.

    • preparing archaeological assessment and excavation reports as appropriate for the type of project, including Due Diligence Aboriginal heritage assessment reports and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Reports.

  • To work respectfully with Aboriginal community members, and to oversee consultation in accordance with current Heritage NSW regulation and policy.

  • To attend project meetings as required.

  • To commit to the delivery of projects within accepted timeframes.

  • To work productively and respectfully with other Coast employees and associates.

  • To comply with relevant work practices, statutory requirements and quality standards as set by Coast.

  • Enhance and promote the image and reputation of the business within the profession, amongst our clients and throughout the community at large.

  • Contribute ideas, suggestions and energy to the ongoing development of the business and the promotion of history and heritage to broader audiences.

Skills & Experience - ESSENTIAL

  • Archaeology Honours degree or equivalent.

  • Consulting experience with Aboriginal heritage management in NSW.

  • Developed understanding of relevant NSW heritage and planning legislation and policy relating to Aboriginal heritage.

  • Demonstrated skills in engaging effectively and respectfully with Aboriginal communities.

  • Demonstrated project management skills, ability to work independently.

  • Demonstrated fieldwork skills including all aspects of archaeological excavation and recording.

  • Demonstrated report writing skills for both assessments and excavations.

  • Willingness to deliver quality work with attention to detail, and be involved in activities beyond strict compliance heritage.

  • Highly organised and systematic, and able to meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel).

  • Construction industry ‘white card’.

Skills & Experience - DESIRED

  • GIS mapping skills.

  • Specialist analysis expertise (e.g. stone artefact analysis, faunal analysis).

  • NSW driver’s licence.

  • Engagement with professional organisations (e.g. AACAI, ICOMOS)

  • Interest in historical archaeology

 

Salary and Conditions

 

Salary commensurate with experience. The position is full-time and based at our new office and display space (15/112 McEvoy Street, Alexandria), with most projects located in the Sydney region and surrounds. Some flexible work arrangements can be considered.

Our new display space provides added scope for Coast to build on our focus to promote Aboriginal history and heritage to the public and we would welcome candidates with enthusiasm to help with this important work.
